Summary

They came to earth-Pestilence, War, Famine, Death-four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all.

When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn’s town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed.

Too bad no one told her Pestilence can’t be killed.

Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he’s eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she’s with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her, and hers towards him.

And now, well, Sara might still be able to save the world, but in order to do so, she’ll have to sacrifice her heart in the process.

Review

Pestilence, a fatal epidemic disease, especially bubonic plague.  -Google

We first start off the book with Sara and her fellow volunteers that have set out to help save their little town. In doing so, Sara is chosen to stay behind and face Pestilence trying her best to end him and his deadly path from making it any further across the world. Sara’s first attempts all failed, and she is taken captive and forced to watch the world die around her as Pestilence continues to run around the globe.

Pestilence, the definition provided is exactly what this character embodies. He has his mission, the only he knows is to bring on death as he rides across oceans. We are able to hear about his life and some information about his brothers, the other horsemen that have yet to come.

I have to say that I loved Pestilence’s characters. Pestilence is not human, so when we get to look at him and see that he does have human-like emotions, it pulls at your heartstrings. I know that some people might see Pestilence’s actions as abuse and that is true. The way that he handles Sara is abusive, and that’s not okay. But, yes I know there’s a but, when you have a being that knows not of human life and was only built and or designed to bring on death to all, what do you expect from the character. The reason why I loved the book so much is that you get to see Pestilence become more human as the story continues. Sara may have a bit of Stockholm Syndrome, she does fall for her capture, but she is also the one who is slowly changing his mindset and actions into human-like characteristics. The atmosphere of this world is very dark, but how many rainbows and unicorns could you expect when reading a book named Pestilence without there being death surrounding him?

What are your thoughts of Pestilence? Would you pick it up and give it a try, or is the thought of constant death, and actions abuse something you can’t overlook? I would really like to know your thoughts on these types of books, is there no way one can redeem themselves, let me know in the comments. Until next time, be sure to Read THS!

Is the fire he feels for Felicity enough to trump his hatred of the Valdez name?

Love is supposed to conquer all, but can it overcome their history?

Review

Short story, kind straight to the point. I enjoyed the book while I was reading it, I did feel the instant attraction between Felicity and Damien. Damien appeared to be all dark and brooding while Felicity is trying to live her life the best she knows how and on her own. Although I did like the two main characters, there wasn’t much depth to them, the characters seemed a lacking not just in their personal lives that they were attempting to live, but also in their pasts. Both of their families are apart of the fantasy world, but we only get glimpses into those worlds, enough information to make sure the reader understood what was going on and why.

Another reason for the 3.5 rating was the sex scenes. With the book only being 188 pages or so long, I felt like there was a lot of sexual scenes and thoughts that were kind of thrown in. I am not one to turn down a hot book, but for me, it almost seemed a little forced.

There are four books in this series, I’m glad this book didn’t end in a cliffhanger. I am not sure I would’ve been eager to pick up the next in the series. I might try to read the next book sometime in the future, maybe I’ll have a different outlook on the overall story.

Review

Anaea, a young lady that has been put to the test both mentally, emotionally and physically. Her body is giving out on her, she was diagnosed with cancer and it has reached its most severe stage, her husband has chosen to leave for another woman, and she has lost her job. During Anaea’s last moments of her life as she knew it, she stands on a bridge contemplating the plunge beneath her or the years, months, weeks or days she may have left to live with her body breaking down before her own eyes. It is during this moment that she is interrupted by a stranger, a stranger who appears to be trying to help her. All the while there is someone after this stranger, and before the attacker is able to finish off the stranger, he grabs hold of Anaea and they plunge down into the icy waters below. During that fall the stranger, known as Hunter transfers from his body to hers.

Hunter seemed like a nice guy stopping to help someone who appeared to be in trouble, but we soon find out that he is anything but a simple nice guy. Hunter has used his dragon powers to transfer his spirit into Anaea’s body to rid himself of the damaged body he was in.

From that moment on, their lives are being lived within the same body. Both of them trying to control the body they are residing in while Hunter is trying to get back to his people the safest way possible, while Anaea is trying to grasp what is happening to her, and who it is that has taken up board and room inside of her mind.

This book was a refreshing take on dragons. I loved reading the struggle between the two characters as they tried to survive one another. The old-time feel when the author thrusts us into a different time period, kept everything so fresh with every detail. C.I. Black hand me wishing for things to work out even when the two shared the same body, I am looking forward to reading more by Black.

Stepbrothers Rules Review

Stepbrothers Rules by Renee Rose

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Summary

LuAnn’s had a crush on her older, rebellious stepbrother since the year he lived with them—his last year of high school. Now, four weeks before graduating from Sarah Wharton Women’s College, she’s been kicked out for having boys in her dormitory, and he’s the one who shows up to collect her. With her parents away in Europe, he brings her to his place, because leaving a young woman unchaperoned isn’t done in 1957.

Brad makes it clear she is not to emulate the wild behavior of his youth, and he starts things out with a long, bare-bottomed punishment. Soon, though, he discovers his stepsister is all grown up, and having her under his authority makes her a temptation too delicious to resist. Before long, he’s strayed way past what is acceptable, turning her into his little girl and bringing her to the peaks of pleasure during her numerous punishments. LuAnn brings out the dominant side of him, but with it comes the desire to take care of her and nurture the sweet innocence she’s been trying to cover up. He wants her for keeps, which means risking their parents’ disapproval and leaving his rebellious side behind forever.

Publisher’s Note: The book contains spanking, elements of ageplay and graphic sexual scenes. If such content offends you, please do not buy this book.

Review

Let me first start with the fact that I love the period this story took place in was what drew me to start flipping pages. This is a first for me, reading something taking place in the ’50s that weren’t related to school research. I will admit I did like the classic hints that were present, the updos, the classic attire and the words used were spot on and added to the story.

Brad has to go to school and pick up his little stepsister that he hasn’t seen for years. When he first lays his eyes on her, he sees that she is not the same 13 year old when he’d last seen her. With these two in close proximate and no parents in sight, Brad takes it upon himself to discipline LuAnn the best he knows how. The creativeness of the writing and the hotness between LuAnn and Brad was what kept me genuinely interested and kept the pages turning. The heat that came from every page turn was extreme, and I will be reading more from this author.

WHORE, SLUT, AN EASY LAY… I’VE BEEN CALLED A LOT OF THINGS.

It turns me on most when a man says it while he’s taking me from behind.

People say there’s a reason I am the way I am.
And sure, some stuff happened to me.
Some messed up sh*t I’d never wish on anyone.
But I’ve been like this long before that night.

That’s not what this story’s about, though.
You think you know? You don’t know a thing.
Let’s start from the beginning, all about how I asked for it.

~Goodreads~

Review

This book, oh my! I will say I wasn’t too fond of the title when I first read it, but it was obscure enough to intrigue me and push me to read the first couple of pages. The title alone can make you not want to move forward, but I encourage you to pick this one up, Willow Winters did a fantastic job with the storytelling.

I will try to explain my love for this start of the series without spoiling it for you guys. The darkness sets you up to feel so much more, there’s love, lust, anger, involving almost all of human emotion between these two characters. It is such a beautiful thing to see two people that have been genuinely hurt and wronged come together to build one another up to be greater than before. Isn’t that what we all want in life? For someone to care enough about us and know about all of our screw ups, but still, love us for us.

Hopefully, that wasn’t much of a spoiler for you, just now that the title is not always what it seems.

Summary

River
As the perilous journey across a country I’d long thought destroyed begins, I don’t know who I am anymore or what I’m becoming. My abilities grow stronger with each passing day, as does the fear of what comes next. All I know is that I will do anything to avoid becoming like Lucifer, and to protect those I love, even if that means protecting them from me.

Kobal
No matter what it takes, I will keep River safe, even if my actions end up driving a wedge between us. River is mine to protect, no matter how hard that might be to do now that our journey has begun. I won’t stop until Lucifer is destroyed, won’t stop until I claim my throne, and she will be by my side when I do. It’s all just a matter of keeping her alive until then.

There are four books in this paranormal romance series which is now complete. Not all things will be resolved in this book. Due to sexual content, violence, and language, this book is recommended for listeners 18+ years of age.

Review

Carved, picks-up right where Good Intentions left off. River and Kobal’s relationship is just a wishy-washy as it was in the first book. One second they’re hot and all over each other and the next second one of them is somehow offending the other, I guess they have a normal-ish relationship. I am happy that this isn’t just a power couple that is completely head over heels in love with one another. It makes everything very refreshing to see a normal type of relationship, as normal as a relationship can be when one is a human, and the other is from hell.

River has been working on her craft, a wondrous gift from her dad, Lucifer. With River working hard to perfect her abilities, she’s working even harder at trying to save herself from becoming like her father. Alongside a group of abled humans who have ranked high among the classes in the camp and Kobal along with his companions, it shows just how when the time comes everyone can work together, we’d hope. I enjoy seeing both River and Kobal working hard to accomplish one main goal, but at times I felt that the story could’ve moved along a little faster.

If anyone checks out the story, let me know if you have the same feelings as I did. From the normal like relationships to the trust, they have to have with one another during post-apocalyptic times, down to the heartfelt moments gives you a warming feeling, and makes you believe everything will work out perfectly fine, only the next book will tell.

River,

It has been thirteen years since the war started, the bombs were dropped, and the central states became a thing of the past. When the war ended, a wall was erected to divide the surviving states from those destroyed. I never expected to go beyond the wall, but unlike all the others who volunteered to go, I wasn’t given a choice.

With a dim knowledge of what I could do, the soldiers came for me. They took me beyond the wall where I learned that the truth is far more terrifying than I’d ever dreamed. Alone, with humans and demons seeking to learn what it is I can do, I find myself irresistibly drawn to the one man I should be avoiding most. One who intrigues and infuriates me. One who is not even a man, not really.

Kobal,

My entire life, I’ve had only one mission, reclaim my throne from Lucifer and put right everything that was torn apart when he was cast from Heaven. It’s a mission I haven’t wavered from, not even when the humans tore open the gates and unleashed Hell on earth.

Now, I’ve never been closer to obtaining my goal yet I find myself risking it all because I cannot stay away from her, a human who may be the key to it all.

***There will be at least four books in this series. Not all things will be resolved in this book. Due to graphic language, violence and sexual content this book is recommended for readers 18+ years of age.***

Please be advised, before moving forward there may be a few spoilers you may now return to your scheduled program.

River and Kobal, what an intense couple, if you can really call them that.

The story first opens up with River and her life after the war. This war which is kept as a secret from the citizens (shocker) is far from being over. The war being waged on the world is between demons and humans, some has opened a door that leads to the underworld. Luckily there are multiple gates until you get to the lowest level, aka “The Devils” territory, but that doesn’t mean the first 6 are filled with emptiness.

There is a sort of tradition where the military comes looking for volunteers to help fight and protect the remaining bits of civilization, and it shows that the military is searching for something or someone. I know you’ve already connected the dots here, River is that possible missing piece, she is taken away from her family, which consists of her baby brother and some of her close friends. Rivers mother, now that is a different story within itself. Once River reaches the camp where they will be training and preparing for their departure deeper into the infected area, she finds out a little about herself. She has abilities, abilities that she’s known about but never had an explanation for and the possibility of how she got her abilities.

Now, this is where Kobal comes into the picture. Due to Rivers powers, Kobal the leader of the ‘good’ demons work hand in hand with anyone who appears to have any type of special abilities; these abilities will be the key to defeating the demons that are escaping through the gates and to bring this war to a full stop. Although they have just met, and within a lot of stories involving other species it starts as instant love. Kobal and River start as what I would call hate to love relationship. They get on each other’s nerves in the beginning, but also feel an attraction. I think stories set up like this make the perfect love stories, with the conflict in the beginning and allowing the characters to grow into something makes it feel a little more real.

I enjoyed this first book of the series; I stayed away from reading the summary because I didn’t want there to be any possibility of spoilers.  A significant portion of the book reveals little peaks into the next part of the series and sets the scene. I enjoyed the characters, and how human the demons came across and the situational building that was provided so that you could see and understand both sides. All in all, I am pleased with the way everything was set up, and I can’t wait to give you guys the review on the second book.

Until next time, be sure to Read THS!

Getting to Know Me Wednesdays

Hey there THS readers,

This week I thought I would get a little more personal than some of my other Wednesday peaks into my life. In lu of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I wanted to share my breast cancer journey with you guys.

img_44182801945055933173754.jpg

I know this post may give off a little melancholy feel, but I promise you guys I am fine.

I first discovered a lump in my left breast at the age of 23, I was not initially alarmed due to family history, and the possibilities of being diagnosed was always a factor. I went to the doctor not long after I found the lump and was informed that in fact, it was cancerous. Before making any decisions about the route I would take, I made sure to get a second opinion at Md Anderson. Living in Houston does have its benefits, so why not take advantage of them right? Anywho, I enjoyed my consultation with my team at Md Anderson, there was a full plan laid out showing me the steps I could take, almost like a road map. Everything was always available to me at any point in time, and anytime I asked questions or wanted to choose a different route the option was available, I  really enjoyed the overall environment of my team and the hospital itself, I felt comfortable with going on a weekly/daily basis and was always greeted with a smile. My cancer walk consisted of chemo, radiation, surgery and the recovery periods, through this process I did not allow for the possibility of negativity to cross my mind, instead, I kept positive thoughts and surrounded myself with my loving family and friends. Although I know everyone has there own journies, and they deal with things differently I can say that my team was supportive in whatever decisions I made, they informed me of every risk, gave me packets and websites to look into for financial aid, as well as groups to talk to when I made decisions to take the steps into my breast cancer journey. I have been in remission for over a year now, and I still speak and see my team all the time. I can easily say that I was blessed with a fantastic group of people to help educate me about the process, and regularly check on me during my procedures, as well as while I’m in remission. Below, I will include some pictures, cancer is never an easy subject to discuss, but for a lot of people, it’s necessary this was just my reflection on a part of my life.

Thanks for stopping by today, and I hope you got a more in-depth look into my life. Until next time readers, be sure to Read THS!

Cutting Edge

Cutting Edge by CD Reiss

A sexy and intense prequel to the Edge Series.

There’s a war going on.

I need to pay attention to my job, not the surgeon. Not his sky-blue eyes or the confidence in his hands. Not the smile under his mask or the way it fits on his jaw.

And doctor or not, gorgeous or not, only a complete jerk would drop his pants in front of me just as a show of dominance.

But he’s a force of nature, and I don’t think I can resist him much longer.

It’s not until I’m the casualty and he’s standing over me that I realize I love him.

I want to tell him before I go under. Just a few words before we’re separated.

But it might be too late.

Well until next time my book lovers.

Paris Bound Review

Paris Bound

Paris Bound by Summer Brooks

I met him in the city of love.
He whooshed by with his perfect little daughter.
I turned around.
And it took him a minute to steal my heart.
He towered over me with his flawlessly sculpted face.
Rich, powerful, and a doting father.
My nasty luck with men told me that he was too good to be true.
I wanted to turn back around.
To run for my life.
But guess what?
I stayed and shook his hand instead.
His mahogany eyes met mine.
Everything went from wrong to right.
Until it all spiraled out of control…
Shane Rodman actually wasn’t too good to be true.
He was the devil with a hidden agenda.
I fell in love with the enemy.
I crossed that line.
But like they say, the line between love and hate is a thin one.

No cheating and a guaranteed HEA!

Review

*Spoilers*

Paris Bound is a short and sweet story where two people are brought together by a sweet headstrong 13-year-old, Shane and Kristina. Shane, a business mogul, and Kristina a fashion designer appearing at her first show in Paris are quickly swept up with one another, although they have different viewpoints on the fashion industry. With this story being so short, it was easy to get through, but it was a little difficult to become invested in the characters with so much going on in such a short time. I did like the chemistry between Shane and Kristina, but falling in love in a total of about 3 days is a stretch for me. I did enjoy the main concept of the story, with Shane being a single dad and wanting to protect his daughter, and by showing Kristina’s hard work and dedication to something she loved, was an overall nice set-up.

This was the first story I have read by the author, I may read her next book to see how things stack up.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

Day 24 of Writing Challenge

Prompt: The clock hits 11:11, make a wish.

Blurb: I stare at the clock waiting for the digital red numbers to show 11:11. You may not believe in making wishes and asking the universe to do you a solid, but I do. When the numbers change, I close my eyes and wish like I had never before. This wish was full of hope and almost begging, I needed this wish to come to fruition. My grandmothers’ health has steadily been declining, and I didn’t know what else to do.

“I wish for the health of my grandmother to be reversed, I wish for her to remain on this earth with me, please give her more time, give us more time we aren’t ready.”

I take a deep breath trying to calm myself before I started crying, again. I will do everything in my power to make sure she is well taken care of, “I promise to do all that I can,” I say towards the ceiling.
