Awaken

Awaken by Skye Malone

Amazon rating: 4.5 stars

Goodreads rating: 3.75 stars

Running away from home was never Chloe Kowalski’s plan. Neither was ending up the target of killers, or having her body change in unusual ways. She only wanted a vacation, someplace far from her crazy parents and their irrational fear of water. She only wanted to do something normal for once, and maybe get to know her best friend’s hot stepbrother a bit better at the same time.

But the first day she goes out on the ocean, strange things start to happen. Dangerous things that should be impossible. Things to which ‘normal’ doesn’t even begin to apply.

Now madmen are hunting her. A mysterious guy with glowing blue eyes is following her. And her best friend’s stepbrother seems to be hiding secrets all his own.

It was supposed to be a vacation. It’s turning out to be a whole lot more.

City of the Falling Sky

City of the Falling Sky (The Seckry Sequence Book 1) by Joseph Evans

Amazon rating: 4.5 stars

Goodreads rating: 3.84 stars

When Seckry Sevenstars is forced out of his village by the greedy Endrin Corporation and relocated to the daunting metropolis of Skyfall City, he harbours resentment for the company and vows to get them back one day for taking away his home, his school and his friends.

Fortunately, the marvels of the city do a good job in distracting Seckry from his anger and homesickness, and it isn’t long before he’s competing at Friction (the city’s most popular multiplayer video game), slurping awe-inspiring multicoloured milkshakes, and getting butterflies on his first date.

Then, when a mysterious email asks Seckry to break into the headquarters of the Endrin Corporation and steal a container full of worms for a hefty sum of money, his anger resurfaces, and he can’t resist the revenge he promised himself.

Alone at night, Seckry creeps through the sewers whilst wondering what experiments Endrin might be doing on the worms, and emerges into the silent complex. But the worms aren’t the only thing that he finds. Staring at him through the darkness, with wide, innocent eyes, is something that makes Seckry’s heart almost stop.

A girl.

She’s shaking, petrified, and has no recollection of who she is or what she’s doing there.

Floodlights bleach the area and Seckry has no choice but to grab a hold of the girl and escape with her.

Suddenly the question of what Endrin were doing with a few worms becomes the last thing on Seckry’s mind. What were Endrin doing with a human?

30 Day Writing Challenge by Cydney

Hey there TH*S readers!

Hey TH*S readers, “It’s the final countdown!” (I know you’re all singing along). I wanted to give you all a quick reminder as the days dwindles down to the start of my first ever hosted Writing Challenge. I am super excited to share some of my prompts with you guys and to also see how you guys respond to the event, plus you can never have too many ideas, right? Below you will find the rules of the writing challenge, the rules are very basic and straight to the point. If anyone has questions about the challenge you may definitely contact me. Thanks!

Rules:

  • Write at least 250 words, mainly the opening paragraph. Of course, you can write more, but I like to keep things open and fresh for future references.
  • Add in an important detail, a favorite name, a favorite flower, something that you’ll always remember about that opening.
  • Starts September 1, 2108, ends September 30, 2018, but feel free to continue, take a break, or start over again at any time.
  • Take 5 minutes out of the day to let your imagination go wild. Five minutes may seem like the smallest amount of time in the world, but I have noticed that every little time gets me a step closer to finishing my story. And although I more than likely go over that five minute break time, I make sure to add something if only a couple of sentences because I am working towards my goal.
  • Share. Don’t be afraid to share where the prompt took you. I will try my best to attach my own blurb so that you all see that I am participating alongside with you all.

Get to Know Me Wednesday

Happy Wednesday readers

This week I’d like to share some of my favorite childhood books with you.

Tar Beach

Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold

Illus. in full color. “Ringgold recounts the dream adventure of eight-year-old Cassie Louise Lightfoot, who flies above her apartment-building rooftop, the ‘tar beach’ of the title, looking down on 1939 Harlem. Part autobiographical, part fictional, this allegorical tale sparkles with symbolic and historical references central to African-American culture. The spectacular artwork resonates with color and texture. Children will delight in the universal dream of mastering one’s world by flying over it. A practical and stunningly beautiful book.”–(starred) Horn Book.

~Amazon~

Tar Beach was by far my favorite childhood book of all time. I think what drew me to it was the fact that it was a young black girl looking at her life. I don’t think I’d ever seen anything like that at my age, and it was nice to see someone like me in a book.

Pickle Things

Pickle Things by Marc Brown

Yeah, I know it sounds like a strange title, but I loved this book as a kid. It was funny, and weird, and had pickles in it so for me, it was fascinating. My mom used always mentioned that I would continuously read and reread Pickle Things, and how the book tickled me so. It is a cute silly children’s book about all the things pickles aren’t, and helps with the imagination, think what the world would be like with pickle everything.

What kind of childhood books do you guys read, any of them as strange or influential as my books?

Well, until next time readers, be sure to Read THS!

Millions Review

Millions (Book 5)  by Pepper Winters

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Publishing Date:

E-book: 300 pages, Audiobook: 11h 4m

Rating: 5/5

Synopsis

Goodreads rating: 4.55 stars

“Tragedy, turmoil, and the ultimate sacrifice. It’s not a question of what I’m willing to sacrifice but who to deserve her…

Can love truly conquer all? Even when so many truths say no?

~Goodreads~

Pepper Winters has done it again. The fifth and final book of the pennies series has finished on a high note, and I must be honest with you guys it took me forever to read this book. I did not want to Pim and Elders journey to end. I tried my best to hold off and not finish the story and well, a chapter of my life.

Pepper Winters has become one of my favorite authors, she’s able to make you swoon, rip your heart out, bite your nails and sit with your jaw open all within the same chapter. That right there ladies and gentlemen takes skill. Now, let’s get down to it.

Pim has been kidnapped, after one of the best times of their lives, she is ripped away from Elder as soon as their lives are beginning. Whom do we have to blame for this? Q. I am telling you guys I was so mad when he decided to pop up and be the hero, he didn’t take out the time to really figure out what was happening, and then on top of all of that he wouldn’t listen, typical. If you can’t tell I hold a sore spot for Q in my heart, I never read Tears for Tess, so this was my first interaction with the characters and I have to say it all started off on a wrong foot.

Pim has finally grown into the woman she was meant to be, she is known to showcase her strength and abilities as well as voice her wants and needs and does just that when she is taken captive. Throughout the story, we are able to read from Pim and Elders perspectives, Pim doing all she can to get free, while Elder does all he can to get to her. Now, isn’t that what we really want? Someone to rescue us when it’s needed, think the world of us, who would also do whatever it took to get them back, talk about a heartthrob. This last book was the perfect ending to a not so perfect story, and I couldn’t think of any other way I’d have their story end.

Well readers, does this sound like a series you would be interested in? Let me know what you think, have you read anything from Pepper Winters, if so which book?

Until next time THS readers, be sure to Read THS!

Getting to Know Me Wednesdays

Hey there THS readers,

For some time I have been contemplating what to post on Wednesdays. I used to use Wednesdays as my update days but soon found that it was either repetitive, or I really didn’t have much to update about my current reads. So, I have reached my happy medium, a weekly or bi-weekly (because I haven’t fully decided) get to know me post.

The first official get to know me post.

Why I started a book blog?

Well, I have been reading for years, and I thought it would be nice to share my opinions and thoughts with other fellow readers. I have been watching booktube for some time and joined Goodreads in 2016 and thought this would be the next best step.

I initially started my blog with the intentions of having some of my reader friends helping with the content. Alas with everyone’s busy schedules it was difficult for anyone to post an update on a constant basis so, I decided to take over and try my best to post on a continuous basis which brings us to today.  I know I’m not perfect at this blogging thing, but it’s nice to be able to read posts from others while being able to share the stories I’m reading and when I get around to them posting my reviews.

So, what brought you all to WordPress, and the book blogging community? My answer is straightforward, I like to read, and I wanted to be able to share my opinions on the books I came across.

Until next time, be sure to Read THS!

30-Day Writing Challenge by Cydney

Hey there TH*S readers!

Hey TH*S readers, do you remember the writing challenge I was hosting, well here it is officially this time. I wanted to give you all this info before I actually kicked off my first ever 30-day writing challenge, which will start September 2018. I wanted to do this with you guys and share my way of creativity, hoping that it would come in handy one day. I have looked at many Pinterest boards, Blog Pages and google pictures of different writing prompts, but the result only gives you lists to follow along with on a daily basis. I wanted to bring you guys 30 days of writing prompts that could help you when you’re stuck in a hard place in your stories, or if you are just starting to journal.

I hope that you all will join me on this prompt writing challenge of mine. Plus, the way I see it, the more open ideas available, the better off you’ll be when writing. If you ever need to pull from one of the prompts for ideas, a plot twist, or you want to take it and completely flip what you’ve already written and added it into your work, then you have a journal of ideas just waiting to be used. I will be re-posting, and reminding you guys about the challenge, so stay tuned.

Pestilence

They came to earth—Pestilence, War, Famine, Death—four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all.

When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn’s town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed.

Too bad no one told her Pestilence can’t be killed.

Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he’s eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she’s with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her … and hers towards him.

And now, well, Sara might still be able to save the world, but in order to do so, she’ll have to sacrifice her heart in the process.

~Amazon~

So far I am in love with this book. Right away I was drawn into the story, the thought of one of the horsemen running around and the world slowly dying as the days tick on it sure was an eye-opener. I can’t wait to see what else comes out of the next pages.

Happy National Book Lovers Day!!

Happy National Book Lovers Day!

Of course, we don’t need a national day to talk about how much we love reading, or the newest books we’ve read, or even our continuously growing tbr lists. But, it is nice to see that reading is big enough to be recognized alongside other “national” holidays such as pancake day, hot dog day, boyfriend/girlfriend day and so on. So here’s to all of you readers out there, now…back to reading.

Thousands Review

Thousands (Book 4 of Dollar Series) by Pepper Winters

Published: August 2017

E-Book, 300 pages

Stars: 5/5

“Love had been stolen from me for reasons entirely my fault. But then a miracle happened, and Pim gave me something I thought was lost forever. She gave me a love I’d earned. Love that ruined me. Love that made me hopelessly hers…”

Once upon a time, I didn’t think I’d ever be normal.
Now, I’m talking and trusting, and it’s all thanks to Elder.
He gave me my life back, and I gave him my heart, but love stories like ours are never simple.
I did something to protect him.
He did something to survive me.
We screwed up.
And now, it’s no longer just about us.
It’s about safety, sanctuary, and sin.

~Amazon~

The Pennies series happens to be one of my favorite series ever. I have seen my share of reviews about the disappointment readers felt from reading Thousands, but I don’t agree. I am so in love with Pim, and Elder the slow build and burn the inner torment they both have to face is so refreshing to me. This isn’t an every day, all of a sudden I can’t resist you love story, they are both struggling to overcome their issues not just for themselves but for each other.

“I knew he loved me before he knew.

He loved me.

I loved him.

I didn’t need anyone else to tell me.

I know.

I trust.

It’s true.

He loves me…

And that was the most incredible thing of all.”

My heart swelled and my eyes wouldn’t stop running, this is one of the moments I have been waiting for this entire series and I can’t wait to read the last book. I am honestly scared of reading the final book, I have invested so much time and emotions into this series that I don’t want it to be over.
